Create a holiday budget—and a payoff plan
List everyone you plan to shop for—including family, friends, teachers, neighbors, and co-workers—and set a spending limit for each person. Include taxes, shipping, gift wrap, travel, and other seasonal costs. If you use a credit card, decide how you will repay the balance before you buy. Paying it in full, or paying it down as quickly as possible, can help reduce interest charges.
Research big-ticket items before you buy – Compare prices, product features, return policies, warranties, and seller ratings. Before checking out, look for a legitimate promo code, cash-back offer, loyalty reward, or price-match policy that could add to your savings.
Time your purchases—but compare the final price – Black Friday and Cyber Monday can bring discounts, but the advertised deal may not be the lowest price. Compare the total cost across retailers, including shipping and fees, and check price history when available. For items that are often discounted in January, a gift card may give the recipient more buying power after the holidays.
Use store apps and loyalty programs selectively – Retailer apps may offer member pricing, digital coupons, rewards, or early access to sales. Review privacy settings, turn on only the notifications you want, and avoid buying something solely to earn points.
Earn double rewards on eligible holiday purchases – Use your Visa® Power Card™ or Advantages Visa Debit Card™ for holiday shopping from November 9 through December 31, 2026, to earn double rewards points. See the sign-up instructions above.
Use free pickup options when they make sense – In-store or curbside pickup may help you avoid shipping fees and delivery delays. Compare the total cost first, because minimum-purchase requirements, travel time, and pickup windows can affect the value.
Shop early and track deliveries – Popular items can sell out, and shipping delays become more common as the holidays approach. Order early, review estimated delivery dates, and use package tracking. If a gift will arrive late, include a photo or note in the recipient’s card so they know something special is on the way.
Choose gift cards for hard-to-shop-for people – Cash in your VantagePoints™ and choose from dozens of plastic or digital gift cards in our Reward Link Catalog. For details and a list of available gift cards, visit uecu.org/vantagepoints. If you live near a UECU location in Wyomissing or Stroudsburg, PA, you can also purchase Visa gift cards in the lobby.
Give an experience instead of another item – Consider tickets to a show or concert, a class, a day trip, a weekend getaway, or another activity you can enjoy together. Confirm dates, restrictions, and refund policies before purchasing.
Make a donation in their honor – For someone who has everything, consider supporting a cause that matters to them. Verify the organization before donating, then share the gesture with a personalized note or the donation confirmation.
