How to Spot a Fake Facebook Business Page
Scammers are creating fake Facebook business pages to steal personal and financial information. Knowing how to spot the warning signs can help you avoid becoming a victim.
Fake Facebook pages often imitate legitimate businesses by copying logos, photos, and branding. Some promote products, giveaways, or loan offers and then direct people to WhatsApp or another messaging platform where scammers attempt to collect personal or financial information. Taking a few minutes to verify a page before interacting with it can help protect your information and your accounts.
Red Flags to Watch For
- Spelling errors in the URL, business name, or page content
- Follower counts that are suspiciously low or extremely high
- No recent posts on the page
- Hours of operation list “always open”
- Company contact information is missing or looks unusual
- Email address may look like the business name but is misspelled and uses a free email service such as Gmail
- Phone numbers that direct you to WhatsApp rather than a business phone line
Additional Ways to Verify a Business Page
- Review “About” information: Compare the page’s “About” information to the company’s official website and look for social media links there. If the Facebook page is linked from the official website, it is more likely to be authentic.
- Look at the page’s history: Check when the page was created and whether it has changed names. A recently created page or one with several name changes can be a warning sign. To check this information, click on the Page Name at the top of the page to open a pop-up card, then scroll down and click on Transparency and Privacy.
- Review posting history: A legitimate business page usually has consistent posts over time, professional branding, and relevant updates. Be cautious if the page has very few posts or only posts information about giveaways and urgent offers.
- Search for duplicate pages: Look up the business name on Facebook and compare similar pages. Fake pages often copy logos, images, and names from a legitimate business.
- Watch out for Scam Messages: Fake pages often promote deals that seem too good to be true, giveaways requiring personal information, or urgent “act now” messages. If a “business page” suddenly messages you out of the blue and asks you to click on a link to verify your identity or other information, it is a phishing scam. Never provide account numbers, passwords, Social Security numbers, or payment details through Facebook messages.
- Look for the “Meta Verified for Business” Badge (a blue check mark): While helpful in identifying legitimate businesses on Facebook, don’t rely on this alone. A verification badge is not a requirement for businesses, and scammers may try to imitate verified pages. If you are unsure, call the business using a phone number from its official website (not a phone number listed only on the Facebook page) and ask whether the page is legitimate.
