Stay Safe this Summer with UECU’s Vehicle Safety Tips! Keep these important things in your car for emergencies.

From flat tires to overheated engines, you never know when or where you’ll be stranded with your car. Before you head out for your summer road trip or family camping excursion, make sure you’re prepared. Here are three relatively inexpensive items that will keep you prepared for some of the most common situations you’ll face on the road.

1. Emergency Kit: Safety is your top priority, so we recommend assembling a kit to keep you and your passengers covered. At a minimum, that should include first aid supplies, a flashlight, bottled water, and fridge-free snacks like granola bars.

2. Flat Tire Solution: This can be as simple as a can of Fix-a-Flat, which can seal and inflate a punctured tire. But for a more comprehensive solution, we recommend a system that includes an air compressor and tire pressure gauge.

3. Jumper Cables: It might seem redundant if you have Roadside Assistance with a service like AAA, but you’ll be glad you had jumper cables when you’re camping in the woods, cell phone reception is spotty, and your car’s battery is drained.

If you’ve experienced frequent breakdowns and the cost for repairs has drained your wallet, it may be time to purchase a new vehicle. With UECU’s Car Buying Service powered by TrueCar, you can easily research your vehicle (see what others paid for the car you want), lock in your savings with a Guaranteed Savings Certificate, get pre-approved for a low-rate auto loan with UECU, and purchase your car! UECU members see an average guaranteed savings of $3,106 off MSRP*.

Shop TrueCar. Get Pre-approved with UECU. Receive a rate as low as 1.74% APR†, rate includes .25% discount for purchasing with UECU’s Car Buying Service. To get started, visit uecu.org/autoloan.

President’s Message:
Let UECU Be Part Of Your Summertime Plans

Summer has officially arrived! For me, this means taking advantage of the longer days and warmer temperatures for leisurely evening walks, family backyard barbecues, or just enjoying a good book in the beauty of the outdoors. For many, the summer signals the end of the school year and vacation time with family in the mountains or on the beach. You may be planning your summer get-away and have begun shopping around to find the best deals on rental vehicles, hotels, and vacation activities. While good deals are important and help you save money, UECU can also help reduce your out-of-pocket expenses, so your dream vacation doesn’t turn into debt that lingers for months or longer.

One opportunity to reduce out-of-pocket expenses is through redemption of the points you have earned through UECU’s VantagePoints™ Reward Program. We are pleased to share that this program was recently enhanced to provide you a greater selection of gift card options, just in time for your summer festivities. In accessing the gift card catalog at uecu.org/rewards, you will find new “premium merchant” options for airlines, gas, restaurants, and national retailers. These merchants include familiar names such as Amazon, Chevron, Delta Airlines, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Lowe’s, Olive Garden, Red Lobster, Shell, Target, Home Depot, Walmart and more! You can continue to increase points available for redemption through using your Advantages Visa® Debit Card™ and Visa Power Card™ when paying for lodging, meals, and souvenirs.

If your summer plans include home improvements, you’ll be happy to learn that we have launched UECU’s new Flex Home Equity Line of Credit. This line of credit has a variable interest rate tied to the Prime Rate, but also incorporates the flexibility to lock in a fixed interest rate on one or more draws. So when you need money for home improvements, debt consolidation, large purchases, or emergencies you can easily access the funds you need, and save on potential future interest costs by locking in the rate. To learn about all of the benefits, visit our website at uecu.org/flexheloc.

UECU strives to make it easy and convenient for members to stay connected to your Credit Union no matter where travels may take you. Through online and mobile banking, you can check account balances, make transfers, pay bills, and deposit checks anytime, anywhere. If travel plans will take you outside of the United States, give us a call before you leave so that we can make the appropriate changes to your account to ensure that use of your Advantages Visa Debit Card™ and Visa Power Card™ transactions are uninterrupted.

Our best wishes go out to you for safe and enjoyable summertime travels. And remember, your Credit Union is never more than a click or phone call away, in assisting with all of your financial needs.

Lender's Message:
Make Your Home More Energy Efficient and Save!

Making your home more energy efficient is good for the environment and your wallet. There are lots of things you can do to your home to conserve energy and save money – from replacing light bulbs to upgrading your old appliances. However, tackling them all at once can seem a bit overwhelming. Try to pick a couple of things you can do each year to improve the energy efficiency of your home and help you save money on your utility bills. We’ve provided some tips to help you get started.

Make sure your attic and walls are well insulated; this will help to keep your home warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Windows and doors that are sealed properly also help to keep cold air out and warm air in during the winter.

Upgrade your windows – Energy Star-rated replacement windows are a great option to improve energy efficiency and save money.

Replace old appliances – Before you actually purchase new appliances, do your research to find out which energy-efficient models are right for your home.

Maintain your air conditioner – Proper maintenance will help ensure that the unit runs efficiently, especially on those really hot days. You can also help to keep your home cool by planting shade trees on the side of the house that gets the most sun exposure.

Improve your heating system – A high-efficiency furnace helps you save money and is better for the environment. Programmable thermostats and apps also make it easy for you to control the temperature of your home and cut your heating expenses. To reduce your monthly water heating bill, also consider replacing your hot water heater if it is outdated.

Replace incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent ones. The bulbs will cost more, but the energy savings they provide over time is well worth the investment.

Install solar panels – Cut your energy cost by producing some of your own electricity. If you are ready to make some upgrades to improve the energy efficiency of your home, we can help! Our new Flex HELOC provides an affordable borrowing option for financing these projects. With an introductory rate of 1.99% APR* for the first year, and the option to lock in a fixed rate after that, you can save on all your home improvement projects. Plus, making your home more energy efficient has tax advantages^ and can potentially increase the value of your home.

Our Financial Services Consultants are here to help you every step of the way, to get started, call 800-288-6423, ext. 4001. To learn more about the benefits of our new Flex HELOC, visit uecu.org/flexheloc.

Cyber Security Tip
Protect your computer from viruses

If you’ve been following the news, chances are you’ve heard about the WannaCry ransomware virus. It has plagued computers all over the world, encrypting Microsoft Windows user’s files, making them inaccessible. And just as the name suggests, it demands a ransom for the files to be restored. If users don’t pay the ransom within the requested amount of time, the virus threatens to destroy the files. Law enforcement advises not paying the ransom, instead, scrub your machine and re-install your files from backups. To avoid downloading malware and viruses like WannaCry, always protect your computer.

• Install software updates on a regular basis and turn on Windows Automatic Updates. Microsoft also recommends running the free anti-virus software for Windows, along with your normal anti-virus for a layered approach.

• Do not open suspicious emails, click on links, or open files from unfamiliar sources. If you do receive an email that looks like it is from a trusted source, but you weren’t expecting it, verify its authenticity. Call the company/person it was sent from and ask them if the email is legitimate.

• Back up your files and photos often. Having a backup of your important files is very helpful if your computer does become infected with a virus.
