President's Message

Security is a Top Priority for UECU.

Throughout 2015 UECU has introduced many new products and services designed to provide our members with additional options to make banking with us even more convenient and easy. In January we introduced ePosit™ Mobile, mobile check deposit, followed a few months later by our mobile loan application and our new car buying service, TRUECar.

Another major initiative for 2015 is the introduction and rollout of UECU’s VISA® credit cards with chip technology. Many countries and merchants outside of the U.S. already employ this technology. As well publicized, there is now a move within the U.S. to establish chip cards as the standard in this country. The embedded microchip provides consumers with greater protection against card fraud and unauthorized use, when used at retailers equipped with chip-enabled terminals. In addition, the chip card is easier and more convenient to use when traveling abroad.

As originally announced in the July 2015 edition of Member News, our release of chip credit cards is now beginning and will be phased in over the next year. You can expect to receive your new VISA Power Card ™ or Home Equity VISA Platinum Card within the next year, even if your current card’s expiration date is beyond that timeframe. If your chip card will be sent much earlier than your current card expires, we will notify you in advance so you can watch for its arrival. Please be sure to activate the new card immediately upon receipt. The UECU VISA Power Card™ and Home Equity VISA Platinum Card will continue to have the magnetic stripe on the back, to accommodate purchases at merchants who have not upgraded their terminals to accept the chip technology.

This new technology will not change the low rate, no annual fee, points earned on purchases, and the many other benefits that you have become accustomed to with UECU’s VISA Power Card™.

The security of members’ financial information is a top priority for UECU, and we employ sophisticated 24/7 systems designed to detect unusual card activity, stop potential fraud, and provide you added peace of mind. As a consumer, there are also many simple steps that you can take to reduce your exposure to credit card fraud, a few of which are as follows:

  • Use your card online and in-person only with trusted retailers. When online, do not use your card on an unsecure website. Secure sites typically have URLs that begin with https, as well as a lock icon displayed in the window of the browser.
  • Shield your card from view when using it in public.
  • Do not use public WiFi or computers for making purchases.
  • Enter credit card details each and every time you make an online purchase – do not store these details on the merchant website.
  • Be cautious of suspicious (“phishing”) emails or phone calls. Do not respond to unsolicited email, text or telephone calls asking for personal or financial information.
  • Regularly review your account activity and keep an eye out for unusual transactions. Through Advantages Online™ banking, set up automatic email or text alerts (E-Notifications™) for purchase transactions over your designated dollar threshold.

We are proud to serve over 44,000 member-owners nationwide and are committed to providing you products and services that offer exceptional value, convenience and security.

 Conquer the Open Road

by Rick Minjock, UECU Lending Manager

Some riders would admit there is nothing more exhilarating than conquering the open road, especially in the fall. It’s a great time to take the long way home and cruise those country roads. If you have been thinking about purchasing a motorcycle but were unsure what to do next, consider these tips before making the big purchase:

Preference – What type of bike do you want? Whether it’s a sports bike or a cruiser, you want to consider the size of the bike, power, speed and comfort. There are many different brands and styles of motorcycles available but you want to make sure that you are purchasing the one that fits your lifestyle. The best way to do this is by researching different types of bikes. Once you have narrowed down your selection, visit the dealership and take a test drive.

Safety – When it comes to motorcycle riding, there is nothing more important than safety. If you are a new rider, you may want to consider a Motorcycle Safety course, where you can learn how to handle the bike. Having the right protective gear is also very critical. Unlike cars, motorcycles do not provide much protection in the event of an accident. But you can safeguard yourself by wearing a helmet, riding pants, a jacket, gloves and boots.

Cost – Consider these questions… Do you want a new or used motorcycle? When do you plan to buy the motorcycle? Many dealerships offer end of year discounts because they need to sell their current stock of bikes to make space for the new models. How much will insurance cost? Since there is typically more maintenance required for motorcycles than cars, will you be able to afford the upkeep? Have you priced the cost of accessories and safety gear? These are important questions for you to answer before you purchase the bike of your dreams.

Utilities Employees Credit Union provides affordable financing options for riders, we just dropped our motorcycle loan rates to as low as 3.99% APR*. We’ve also simplified the application process. You can now get pre-qualified for a motorcycle loan in minutes. You can apply online at or through our mobile banking app. Remember to get pre-qualified before you visit the dealership, to ensure that you are getting the best deal possible. If you have questions, please contact a Financial Service Consultant at 800-288-6423 Ext. 4001.

* APR=Annual Percentage Rate. Lowest quoted rate is based upon an evaluation of credit-worthiness criteria and maintaining an active UECU checking account (at least one transaction per month). Rate quoted for a 60-month term and 2015/2016 model years; your actual rate may differ. Motorcycle loan rates range from 3.99% APR to 15.50% APR. Loan is subject to underwriting and approval. Rate quoted is for new loans only; refinancing of existing UECU loans are not eligible. Certain model year and term restrictions apply. Limited time offer. May be discontinued at any time without prior notice. Equal Opportunity Lender.

Fraud & Identity Theft Protection

Protecting your identity has become an enormous task. Merchant data breaches have multiplied drastically over the past several years. Hackers have continued to find new and creative ways to access sensitive information. This has left many people feeling very vulnerable because they unknowingly had their account information or identity stolen. That is why it is more important than ever, that you take the necessary steps to protect yourself.

UECU is here to help. We will begin offering an online resource center where you can access information regarding internet safety, online fraud, identity theft, tips on protecting your UECU accounts and more. The program will be available on the UECU website in October. Also, look for information in the News You Can Use eNews.
